ABOUT THE BOOK
The book, History of Nigerian Folksongs stands as a direct response to the urgent call from music educators and students alike for a comprehensive resource on folksongs, aligning closely with the mandates of national educational policies and examination syllabi like those of JAMB, IJMB, NECO and WAEC. This meticulously curated volume serves as an expansive anthology of Nigerian folksongs, meticulously documenting musical scores and notations in indigenous dialects, reflecting the rich tonality of Nigerian-African music across major tribes dating back to 1000 A.D.
Within its pages, readers encounter iconic anthems spanning historical eras, from the colonial-era anthem, God Save The Queen to the post-colonial tribute and anthem Nigeria We Hail Thee, and the modern anthem Arise Oh Compatriots of 1978. Furthermore, the book provides insight into the symbolic significance of the Nigerian flag, the designer and cost of arms, alongside the inclusion of the popular Ogun State anthem ‘Ise Ya!’ with plans for additional State’s anthems in future volumes.
Through its ethnographic lens, the book unveils the intricate evolution of Nigeria’s cultures and heritage through folksongs, offering moral guidance to reinforce academic and societal values among young learners. It meticulously categorizes folksongs by themes such as praise, lullabies, nationalism, work-songs, and ceremonial music, presenting readers with their historical continuum before, during, and after independence
